Let’s Talk About Sex…

Sexual immorality that is. If there is one of many things that my exfundy state of mind left with me, it’s my belief in absolutes regarding sex. First a bit of back story:

Reading the sentiments of exchristians, atheists, agnostics, or anyone outside of the fold, I notice that many of them do not believe in absolutes when it comes to sex. For example, many believe that all should decide what they consider to be appropriate sexual behavior even if those views vary. Some believe that open marriage, group sex, same sex, etc are all good as long as one is comfortable engaging in it. They often go on to say that no one should be judged for their preferences. Well I must say that I’m sorry. Sorry because I have just as much of a right to make judgements about a person based on their actions without giving a thought to adjusting my thinking. It is the same right as those who practice what I consider to be immoral. Will I attempt to police ones personal life? Absolutely not. BUT if one fills me in on the details of their sex life (which has happened), don’t expect me to smile and tell you it’s ok as long as you’re comfortable. My exfundy mindset still affects me in such a way that I’m repulsed at some of the things that I’m told, hear, and read. That is not to say that I’m the most sexually pure angel around. By biblical standards, I myself might be considered sexually immoral at times. Sex outside of marriage is ALWAYS considered immoral within the Christian context. By human standards, I’m quite sexually moral.

My point, people have the right to make judgements about a person based on their behavior just as much as those who “follow their passion.” You aren’t hurting me by making your own rules just as I’m not hurting you by believing you are immoral.

So let’s agree to disagree.

    Great post and well spoken.

Even without the Bible I’m surprised people still try to rationalize sex outside of marriage. Think about all the devastation, death, disease and broken families that would never occur if people didn’t have sex out of wedlock.
